The Last Will of Sarah Slater
Sarah Slater, known to those who study the Lincoln assassination as the mysterious veiled lady who served as a courier for the Confederacy, is a supporting character in my novel Hanging Mary. Born as Sarah Antoinette Gilbert, Sarah married a North Carolinian named Rowan Slater and divorced him in 1866. She eventually married a William W. Spencer, whom she survived. Sarah died on June 20, 1920, and left a will, a scan of which can be seen as a PDF document at the link below. The original will is held at the Dutchess County Courthouse in Poughkeepsie, New York.
